Residents gathered in St Chad’s Park on Saturday (15 February) to celebrate the extension of the popular Street Tag app to the Marks Gate and Chadwell Heath area.
Street Tag encourages families or groups of friends to get active, by walking, cycling or jogging around the borough in pursuit of virtual tags. Participants download the app onto their phones to track down the tags and collect points, competing with each other or as teams.
The new tags have been introduced to the TfL routes that connect Marks Gate to Chadwell Heath, thanks to a new partnership with regeneration organisation, Be First, who are building new affordable homes in the area.
The event was boosted by the introduction of a brand new Poly Tag feature which allows users to experience particular assets, such as houses, hotels, or playgrounds, in Augmented Reality (AR) through the Street Tag app. Users can buy and sell these assets using their points and watch their value increase as more and more people visit.
Will Clutton, Development Manager for Be First, explained: “We’re delighted to help extend Street Tag to the north of the borough, as it’s a really fun way to get more people more active.
“The new Street Tag feature is particularly exciting because it introduces a Monopoly-style virtual reality element. But instead of paper money, you can buy and trade property with physical activity!”
Poly Tags can be bought using the Street Tag points (i.e. STcoins) and can be sold on the Poly Tag Market. The virtual assets are powered by the physical activities of the Street Tag community. This means if you own a Poly Tag, the value of your Poly Tag increases automatically after every 1000 scans (this includes your scans and other families scans on your Poly Tag). Read more here.
See what other Street Taggers have to say about the feature: Barking and Dagenham resident, Angela Denise said: “I was excited to see the Poly Tag pop up nearby and couldn’t wait to find out what it was all about. Once detected the app switched to camera view and there on the street was a house. It’s rather cool.”
Seun Oshinaike, Founder of Street Tag, said: We are excited to be designing the future of physical activities with families, and making physical activities fun, sustaining and accessible.”
“Slightly confusing the first time I used it, but now I know what to expect it’s fine. I do like the way a little house pops up” Jacky, 63, Barking and Dagenham residents.

About Street Tag
For communities, Street Tag is exceptional at bringing together families, neighbors and communities to get out more, by turning their streets into a virtual playground, to increase residents' outdoor experience in walking, running and cycling more to earn rewards.
1. Virtual tags are placed in popular walking routes and areas with green space to encourage participatory and physical activities.
2. Families walk, run or cycle to virtual tags that are placed on the interface of the apps.
3. Virtual Tags are worth an average of 10 points per tag. Once users are near/within a 40- meter radius of a tag, the player receives the points which help the family/team to move up the leaderboard. There are also QR code tags worth 50+ points that are assigned to special buildings such as leisure centres, libraries or a building of activities like Robert Clack Leisure Centre.
4. At the end of the challenge (be that approx. every 12 weeks). The top 15 teams are given prizes. There are also other opportunities for teams to win secondary prizes during the leaderboard activity such as the #CashTagHunt that are spread across the community.
5. Tags change colour to red once they have been scanned, and cannot be scanned again for another hour, thus encouraging the user to explore other tags that are not yet scanned.
